Getting Involved: Conference Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer Opportunities
RWA needs lots of volunteers to lend a hand, and we have several openings available. These openings include set up for events such the Literacy Autographing, Luncheons, and Awards Ceremony, and help during registration, workshops, etc.
Tote Bag Stuffing
Stuff approximately 1,850 conference tote bags with 6 books each. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes—this job requires being on your feet for a few hours. (Monday and Tuesday)
Goody Room Maintenance
Maintain the condition of the goody room by keeping up with item restocking and organization. (Wednesday—Saturday)
Registration Help
Duties include handing out registration materials to attendees. Staff from the office will be there to help and to answer questions. (Wednesday—Saturday)
Librarians’ Day Help
Be present at the Librarians’ Day event to assist Librarian Liaison with event set up. (Wednesday)
Librarian Goody Room Help
Volunteer also will be present in the Librarian Goody Room when authors drop off promotional items and will maintain the condition of the room. (Wednesday)
Literacy Autographing Set Up
Set up the room in preparation for the Literacy Autographing. Unpack books to stack on the tables, set out name cards, and help get things organized. Set up will involve carrying boxes of books, so wear comfortable clothes, as the book boxes can be dirty. (Wednesday)
Literacy Autographing Author Attendants
Make sure the authors have water, among other duties during the Literacy Autographing. This will involve being on your feet for a long period of time, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. (Wednesday)
Literacy Autographing Cashier – 10 Key Experience Only
If you have ten-key or cashiering experience, this is the job for you. You will process the sale of autographed books--fast 10-key typing is a must. (Wednesday)
Literacy Autographing Raffle Ticket Sales
Sell raffle tickets to the people at the Literacy Autographing. (Wednesday)
Literacy Autographing Usher
This job entails directing people to check out lanes, stand at the doors to direct shoppers to the sales floor and to the exits. (Wednesday)
Literacy Autographing Pack Up
After the event ends, the remaining books need to be boxed up. This job requires you to be able to carry boxes full of books and be on your feet for approximately a half-hour to an hour. (Wednesday)
Annual General Meeting Volunteer
Volunteer duties will vary but include checking membership credentials, assisting with set up, etc. (Thursday)
Luncheon Set Up
Volunteers must be physically able to carry/move boxes and place books on chairs before the Keynote Luncheon. (Thursday and Friday)
Luncheon Greeters/Badge Checkers
Greet attendees as they enter the lunch area and verify they are wearing an RWA conference badge. (Thursday and Friday)
Workshop Moderator
Retrieves the speaker packet from workshop room and sets up the speaker name tents. Also, the moderator makes sure the correct sign is at the door with right time and introduces the speaker. (Thursday—Saturday)
Workshop Desk Monitor
Answer questions from attendees about directions to various rooms and advice about which workshops to attend. (Thursday—Saturday)
Editor/Agent Appointments
Duties included registering people as they arrive for their appointments, calling people for their appointments, helping to keep track of time. (Friday and Saturday)
Awards Ceremony Ushers
Collect passes to the RITA and Golden Heart Finalist seating area. (Saturday)
