2017 PRO Mentor of the Year: Maggie Marr

Romance Writers of America is a unique organization in that so many of our published authors reach out to work with the unpublished members. They mentor, they encourage, they motivate, and when needed, they give swift kicks in the rear ends to get people moving forward to the dream of publication.Maggie Marr

This year the PRO Steering Committee received many nominations for PAN authors who met and exceeded the expectations for a mentor. It’s always hard to select just one person, and, after much discussion, the committee selected Maggie Marr.

Susannah Erwin, a 2017 Golden Heart finalist and the PRO member who nominated Marr, said, “As a leader in the LARA RWA chapter, Maggie spearheaded several programs designed to help general members become PRO and PRO members to become PAN. The PRO members have benefited greatly from opportunities to contribute to chapter romance anthologies, matching published authors with unpublished authors in a one-on-one mentoring relationship (Maggie being a terrific mentor to her mentee), creating before-meeting events such as the Published Author Chat (designed to lift everyone but especially to help the PRO members who may not be PAN eligible yet), and the Write-In to encourage all of us to get words on paper. Maggie gives unstintingly of her time, her professional advice, and her valuable insight to PRO members. I am honored to nominate her."

When I called Maggie to give her the good news, she kept thanking me. I told her that she was the one who had done the work, and this was an earned acknowledgement of how much she’s given back to the romance community, especially to those of us still chasing our dream of publication. She replied, “It’s not work when you love it.”

Congratulations Maggie, you earned it.
