RWA Statement on NYT Book Review Articles

Romance Writers of America would like to add our voice to those who have spoken out regarding The New York Times Book Review’s recent coverage of the romance genre and the response from the Books Desk, which left as much to be desired as the original article.

We think romance is deserving of fair critique—not critique that is reductive and dismissive, showing a clear lack of respect for the genre. Romances entertain, console, and uplift readers; we are a genre that allows everyone to find love and fulfillment.

We encourage the Times to take a more expansive look at what the romance genre has to offer, but, in the end, we take great pride in knowing that our novels bring the power of love and hope to millions of people on a daily basis.
