The Importance of Body Language
Beyond Winks, Blinks, Twitches and Nods: Writing Body Language to Enhance Character and Story
It is said that more than 60% of human communication is non-verbal. What we say with words can be emphasized, confused, or even contradicted by a gesture or facial expression. Writing body language for the real or fictional characters in our stories can be tricky, boring, or cliché. But writing body language well can add a rich layer of intriguing detail to characters and can let readers in on hints that even our characters don’t yet know.
This session will cover:
- The “Poker Tell” and what Walt Disney knew about body language
- Subtleties and nuance, avoiding over-generalizing
- Categories of body language
- Sick, sleepy, crazy or drunk, body cues altered
- Body language variations: gender, age, and culture
- Avoiding clichés and corny tropes
- The body telling the truth when the lips lie; writing Deceit
- The language of love; beyond “heaving” and “throbbing”
- Body language as character-defining quirks
- The power of body language to convey character and story hints
- Becoming a body language spy
This session is designed to be a fun, interactive learning session. Come prepared to play.
Betsy Graziani Fasbinder has been a licensed psychotherapist for more than 25 years working with both voluntary and court referred clients. She discovered early in her work not to rely solely on what clients say with words in order to assess their needs and condition, but to observe what their bodies say for hints and clues.
Since 1998 Betsy has provided public speaking training in Fortune 500 companies across the U.S. and internationally, working with executives and entry-level employees. Helping public speaking clients to observe their own body language on film is a vital part of her coaching and assists clients to communicate with authority, authenticity, and deep connection to listeners. She coaches writers, artists, and other introverts to prepare their speaking skills for book launches, readings, and media interviews.
Betsy’s debut novel, Fire & Water, received multiple honors and has more than 200 5-star Amazon reviews. Her memoir, Filling Her Shoes: A Memoir of an Inherited Family was released in May 2017 and has received a Booklist Starred review and was named a 2017 Book To Read by Booklist.

SPECIAL ALL-DAY WORKSHOP
with Jeff Gerke
Hack Your Reader's Brain
9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
ATTENDANCE IS LIMITED TO 50 ATTENDEES!
HACK YOUR READER’S BRAIN—Bestselling fiction doesn’t happen because the writer gets all of the so-called rules of fiction right. It’s not about avoiding gerunds or -ly adverbs or head-hopping. People read a book from beginning to end because they’re carried away, fully engaged. They stay interested all the way through. In other words, they don’t get bored. But how do we do that? If only there were some way to tap into how to engage the reader’s brain. Well, there is! Come hear the neuroscience of reader engagement, and learn how to use it to catch your reader’s attention, utterly engage your reader, and keep your reader reading all the way to the end.
When you’re truly ready to make your fiction publishable, it’s time to call Jeff Gerke. Jeff trains novelists how to better do what it is they’re trying to do. He trains through his top-rated Udemy class, “Write Your Best Fiction and Get It Published.” He trains through his latest e-book, Hack Your Reader’s Brain: Bring the Power of Brain Chemistry To Bear on Your Fiction. He trains through his five books for Writers Digest: The Irresistible Novel, Plot Versus Character, The First 50 Pages, Write Your Novel in a Month, and The Art & Craft of Writing Christian Fiction. He trains through the many writers’ conferences he teaches at all over the country every year. He trained his authors when he ran Marcher Lord Press, the premier publisher of Christian speculative fiction, which he sold after an award-winning 5-year run. And he trains through the freelance editing he does for his clients at www.jeffgerke.com. Jeff is known for his canny book doctoring skills and his humorous and encouraging manner, which leaves writers feeling empowered and like they really can do this thing after all. He lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and three children.
