Digging Deep for Conflict

with Bestselling Authors Melinda Curtis and Anna J Stewart

ANna & Mel.png

Ah, conflict. If there is one element of writing that can be the most difficult to grasp and implement, it's pesky, irritating conflict. What exactly is it, how do you create it and, most importantly, how do you keep it fresh and interesting for the entire length of your story? These are some of the questions USA Today bestselling authors Melinda Curtis and Anna J Stewart will be addressing in their interactive, hands-on workshop for SVR in March.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their characters and story outlines to this meeting to see if you pass Melinda's and Anna's conflict test. Do you actually have conflict, or is it a situation that can be solved with a conversation? Is your conflict strong enough to build an entire story around? Is your conflict realistic and believable and most importantly, solvable in the pages you have?

Come with your conflict questions and problems. Time permitting, we will break into smaller groups for more intense examination of attendees' story and character conflicts (and maybe help you brainstorm out some of those plot problems you're having!).

Melinda Curtis is an award-winning, USA Today bestselling hybrid author of over 35 books and novellas. She bears scars from editor rejections and bruises on her forehead from head-thunks while trying to learn conflict. Join her for this user-friendly session that will add actionable tools to your writer toolbox.

USA Today bestselling hybrid author Anna J Stewart is a former Golden Heart finalist who still bangs her head against the wall when it comes to conflict. Since publishing her first novella with Harlequin in 2014, she has written more than 20 novels and novellas in various romance genres and recently  returned to her true love, paranormal romance, with the release of Warden of Magic, the first of her brand new Tome Wardens trilogy, available in the February issue of Heart’s Kiss Magazine.

The Blue Cult

with author and Retired SFPD Homicide Detective

Karen Lynch

After 29 years as a police officer, it was breast cancer that finally caused Karen to leave the profession she had loved, but had also worn her down.

In the years following, she has researched and contemplated why there are still so few women in law enforcement. When she joined the first wave of female officers in 1981, women represented about 15% of uniformed patrol officers nationwide, yet today, only 11% of law enforcement officers are female.

The answer to why this is so is complex. Though police work is a profession that does require some physical strength, Karen believes it is the glorification of physical strength, and the police culture’s over emphasis on its importance that has deterred women from entering the profession. No matter how much of a sharpshooter a woman is, no matter how brilliant, she will always be viewed as less than by her male peers. Most women, rightly, would avoid such a work culture. In Karen's case, she was unwittingly prepared for a life of police work by her abusive mother.

The Blue Cult, police culture, how women fit in to it, or do not, are some of the topics she will touch on, as well as answering any questions you may have about women police, police shootings, gun reform topics, and more.

There will be NO MAY MEETING due to the RT Booklovers Convention in Reno, NV this year.

We will have a regular program in June.
