Overview: Some of the most popular and highly esteemed novels in romantic women’s fiction today locate themselves in an intriguing Place. Far more than a backdrop for action, an enriched setting intrigues readers through its Environment—a winning combination of tone, atmosphere, characterization, and theme that lures readers back to a specific place, book after book.

Using successful examples from a variety of notable romantic women’s fiction authors, Virginia McCullough explores the subtle differences between setting and environment, providing useful techniques for enriching the worlds in which our stories unfold. Here, Virginia will discuss how characters interact with various elements, ultimately blending into a one-of-a-kind environment that both reveals and subtly influences our characters. She will also discuss how painting word pictures of characters living in their specific environments helps writers show readers what’s happening, rather than tell them.

Format: As an online workshop, this program is catered to fit your own particular schedules.

Here’s how it works:

(2/20) Friday morning—Setting vs. Environment: Presenter Virginia McCullough will upload an introductory post, discussing the intriguing distinctions between setting and environment, followed by a day-long (at your convenience) presenter/community online discussion.

(2/21) Saturday morning—Techniques & Tips: Virginia will offer another post on techniques and tips for enhancing sense of place—Environment—in your writing, through providing successful examples from selected published works, followed by a day-long (at your convenience) presenter/community online discussion with the workshop community.

(2/22) Sunday—Feedback: Relying on her extensive coaching expertise, Virginia invites participants to share a passage, excerpt, or ideas regarding creating alluring environments for her feedback, as well as community input.
