Local RWA chapters offer a number of conferences, contests, and workshops. Listed below are the chapter contests and conferences scheduled for the coming months.

    April Contests

    **The Golden Rose Contest

    Sponsor: Rose City Romance Writers, Portland, OR
    Fee: $25–35
    Deadline: April 30, 2017
    Eligibility: Any non-contracted author of romantic fiction (RWA members only) unpublished in book-length (50,000 words or more) in the last three years and any member of RWA who is not eligible to join RWA-PAN.
    Entry: All electronic. Must be the first 10,000 words of a full-length novel with a projected length of 50,000 words or more. No novellas or short stories. All heat levels and LGBTQ leads are accepted across all categories. RCRW embraces diversity across all categories.
    Categories: Contemporary Series, Contemporary Single Title, Historical, Novel with Strong Romantic Elements, Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Romantic Suspense, Young Adult.
    Preliminary Judges: Published, PRO and unpublished authors. All entries will be read and judged by three trained judges, at least one of whom will be a published author or a member of RWA PRO.

    Unpublished Maggie Award for Excellence

    Sponsor: Georgia Romance Writers
    Fee: $20–40
    Deadline: April 30, 2017 at 10:00 p.m. EDT
    Entry: Entries must be at least 40,000 words and never been published. The total number of double-spaced pages may not exceed 35 pages per entry and must include a synopsis.
    Categories: Category Short Romance; Contemporary Single Title; Historical (includes Regencies); Mainstream Fiction with a Central Romance (formerly Novel with Strong Romantic Elements); Paranormal (includes Futuristic, Time Travel, Fantasy, etc.); Romance with Religious or Spiritual Elements (formerly Inspirational Romance, not to be confused with Paranormal/Fantasy); Romantic Suspense; and Young Adult Romance.
    Judges: Published authors. Judges will return critiqued entries with constructive comments.
    Final Judges: Acquiring editors from Carina Press/Harlequin, Wild Rose Press, Bethany House Publishers, Grand Central Publishing/Hachette Book Group, Sourcebooks, Entangled, and Soul Mate Publishing.

    Eligibility requirements: The TARA Contest is open to unpublished writers and published authors of novel-length fiction. The author does not have to be a member of Romance Writers of America® (RWA) to enter the TARA Contest; however, the entry must be the author’s original work of novel length, unpublished, and not contracted at the time of the contest deadline.     **Ignite the Flame Contest (ITF)

    Sponsor: Central Ohio Fiction Writers
    Deadline: May 31, 2017
    Fee: $20/COFW members and $25/non-members
    Eligibility: Open to published and unpublished authors. Published authors may enter any category in which they're not published, or in which they've not been contracted for publication within the past five years.
    Entry: On-line entries only. Submit up to15 pages (15-page maximum), in RTF format only, double-spaced, with manuscript title, genre and page number in the upper left-hand header. If your Igniting the Flame scene is not in the first chapter of your manuscript, please include a set-up for the judge. Set-up and entry are to be submitted as one file. The set-up will not be critiqued or affect your submission score. Our contest is named Ignite the Flame for a reason. We want to lose ourselves in the one scene of your unpublished manuscript when your hero and heroine first meet (or reunite after a period of time) and experience that first spark of attraction, that irresistible heat drawing them together.

    **The Molly 2017

    Sponsor: Heart of Denver Romance Writers
    Fee: $30 for HODRW members, $35 for all other RWA members, and $40 for all non-RWA members
    Deadline: May 31, 2017. Early Bird Discount of $5 before May 1, 2017.
    Eligibility: All writers unpublished in book-length fiction within 3 years prior to entry deadline, that do not have a contract prior to the final entry date. Finalists will be announced before the RWA National Conference.
    Entry: First pages (up to 25) of your manuscript plus up to 5 pages of your synopsis, which may be commented on but not judged. This can be a combination of Prologue plus Chapter One, but 30 pages maximum, including the synopsis. End on a hook.
    Judges: First round is four trained published and unpublished judges, and lowest score is dropped.

    *2017 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence

    Sponsor: Southern Magic Romance Writers
    Fee: $25 for each book. Payment will be made on the RWA website via PayPal, which also allows for credit card payment.
    Deadline: June 1, 2017
    Eligibility: All authors of novel-length or novella-length romance fiction (traditionally and self-published).
    Entry: Books must have an original publication date and copyright of 2016. Electronic books may be entered when not available in print. Must provide a copyright page produced by the publisher. Limit of two books per author and author must provide four copies of the entered book, which will not be returned.
    Categories: Historical; Romantic Suspense; PF&S; Contemporary; Teen; Inspirational; New Adult; and Novella (20,000 – 40,000 Words). Note: If a category receives less than 5 entries, the author has the option to move that entry into another category or withdraw the entry (with refund of entry fee). Books cannot be returned.
    Judges: Avid readers of romance, booksellers, and/or librarians (authors may not judge this contest).

    *I Heart Indie Contest

    Sponsor: Las Vegas Romance Writers
    Fee: $15
    Deadline: June 1, 2017
    Eligibility: The contest judges the covers and back cover copies of books and novellas that were independently published (either electronically or in print) in the United States for the first time prior to April 30, 2017. (Note: the RWR had an error,  giving this date as 2016. April 30, 2017 is correct.)
    Entry: Entry form, the book’s cover, the text of the back cover copy, and the entrance fee. Electronic entries only.
    Categories: Contemporary, Historical, Erotic, Inspirational, Paranormal, Suspense, Young Adult, New Adult, Novella, Sci-Fi Fantasy and Western (Contemporary or Historical).
    Judges: All the entries will be judged by book club members who are avid readers. Every effort will be made to use book clubs that are genre-specific.
    Final Judges: The finalists will be judged by agents experienced in working with indie authors. Past agent judges have expressed interest in representing one or more of our finalists. The Best of the Best will be selected by our first-round book club judges from the 11 category winners.
    Top Prize: The winners will be announced at the Las Vegas Valley Book Festival and featured in an advertisement in the RWR. The finalists will be listed on the LVRW website and the winners’ covers and back cover copy will be published on LVRW’s website once they are announced. Winners and finalists will also receive an electronic badge that can be placed on book covers, websites, or anywhere the winner deems appropriate, that announces the first place win.
