Local RWA chapters offer a number of conferences, contests, and workshops. Listed below are the chapter contests and conferences scheduled for the coming months.

    **27th Annual Joyce Henderson Writing Contest

    Sponsor: Southwest Florida Romance Writers

    Entry: All electronic. First 20 pages of book-length fiction (min 40,000 words).

    Heart to Heart Contest

    Sponsor: San Francisco Area Romance Writers

    Eligibility: Open to all unpublished writers. Prospective entries shall not have ISBN/AISN numbers.
    Entry: All electronic. Enter the magical scene in which your main characters meet for the first time and feel that spark of attraction. Maximum 15 pages (with an optional one-page setup, unjudged). Each entry may only be entered in one category. Submit as many different entries as you wish.

    Judges: Each entry receives three judges, including one PRO/PAN judge. Each judge will provide constructive feedback.
    Final Judges: Top three finalists in each category will have their entries read by an agent, a print editor, and an e-publisher editor.

    *Midnight Sun Cover Contest

    Sponsor: Alaska Romance Writers (AKRWA)
    Fee: $15.00
    Deadline: September 1, 2017
    Eligibility: Any romance novel, novella, or short story published either electronically or in print in the United States for the first time prior to August 30, 2017.
    Entry: Completed entry form, the book’s cover in digital format (JPEG only, see website for details), and the entrance fee.
    Categories: This contest seeks a single, most compelling cover; however, Honorable Mentions will be given to the highest ranked covers in the following themes: Sweetest Romance, Best Male, Best Female, Sexiest Couple, Best Historical, Most Whimsical, Best Paranormal/Sci-fi/Fantasy, Best Romantic Suspense, Best Young Adult, and Best Contemporary.
    Judges: All entries will be placed on prominent display in printed format at the Alaska Writer’s Guild (AWG) 2017 conference, co-sponsored by AKRWA. Conference attendees and presenters (approximately 150) will select first-round entries via ballot box.
    Final Judges: Trained judges will select the top winner from the top ten entries selected at the conference. Final judging will occur at the annual AKRWA Writing Retreat at the end of September, with the winner announced in early October.
    Top Prize: The Finalist will also be announced on the AWG and AKRWA websites. In addition, the Finalist will receive a 3-week NetGalley slot (date to be determined by availability at time of announcement), a gorgeous aluminum print of their winning cover, and an electronic badge that can be placed on book covers, websites, or anywhere the winner deems appropriate. Honorable Mention covers will be published on the AKRWA website.

    Eligibility: Books with an original 2016/17 publication date. Both traditionally-published and self-published books may be entered. Books by STAR members are not eligible for entry. Books must be published by contest deadline.
    Entry: All electronic. Enter your 2016/17 published book cover AND promo blurb (up to 75 words). Covers will be featured on the STARcrossed Cover Pinterest board. One category.

    **Gateway to the Best

    Sponsor: Missouri Romance Writers of America (MORWA)
    Fee: MORWA Chapter members $20 for 1st entry/$10 for additional entries; Non-chapter members $30 for 1st entry/$15 for additional entries.
    Deadline: The contest opens for entries on August 15, 2017. Entry and payment must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. CDT, September 15, 2017.
    Eligibility: All authors of the entry are unpublished and not contracted in novel-length fiction (over 40,000 words) within the last 3 years from July 30, 2017. Self-published authors will be considered eligible to enter the Gateway Contest with any unpublished work. MORWA will consider any work available for purchase online or in print at any time to be published and ineligible.
    Entry: Entries to the Gateway are up to the first 7000 words of the manuscript. No synopsis is required. Formatting requirements are included in the Official Rules.

    **Melody of Love

    Sponsor: Music City Romance Writers, Nashville, TN
    Fee: $20–35.00; critique of optional blurb for additional $10.
    Deadline: Contest opens August 15, 2017 with a deadline of September 15, 2017.
    Eligibility: The MOL Contest is open to unpublished writers and published authors of novel-length fiction. The author does not have to be a member of RWA to enter the MOL Contest; however, the entry must be the author’s original work of novel length, unpublished, and not contracted at the time of the contest deadline.     Entry: All electronic. Must be the first 15 pages of a full-length novel with (minimum length 50,000 words). No novellas or short stories. All heat levels are accepted across all categories. A short blurb (optional/non-judged unless critique requested for additional fee) of no more than 200 words may be included. Entries capped at 60. Enter soon for a chance to get your work in front of editors and agents! Finalists will be announced around November 1, 2017. Projected announcement of winners December 1, 2017.

    **MARA Fiction From the Heartland

    Fee: $35.00
    Deadline: September 22, 2017
    Eligibility: Open to any writer, unpublished in book-length fiction (40K) in the past five years of deadline AND uncontracted in book-length fiction at the time of deadline. Contest is not open to MARA members. See contest rules for detailed eligibility requirements.
    Entry: The first page of each entry must start with Prologue or Chapter 1 and shall NOT exceed 10,000 words, including any prologue AND Synopsis. (Synopsis is Required). See contest rules for complete list of entry requirements.
    Categories: Category Romance, Contemporary Single Title, Historical, Romance Suspense, Paranormal, Erotic Romance, Young Adult Romance/New Adult Romance, Inspirational.
    Judges: Entries will be judged by two (2) experienced judges, ONE of whom will be a published author.

    October Contests

    **The Suzannah 2017

    Sponsor: NOLA STARs
    Fee: $30 prior to Sept. 1st, $35 on or after Sept. 1st. Members receive a $5 discount.
    Deadline: October 1, 2017
    Eligibility: Writers may or may not be published; however, the manuscript must fit within the romance genre and be unpublished and uncontracted.
    Entry: Entry should be a maximum of 7,200 words, including synopsis (there is no restriction on length of synopsis, so long as the entire entry does NOT exceed 7,200). Use your computer counting feature to figure word length.
    Categories: The Suzannah is different from most other writers’ contests in that published authors and unpublished writers all compete against one another in a single pool of entries without categories. Yep, you read that right. Published and unpublished writers all hashing it out together for a spot as one of the six finalists. The only criteria we require is that the manuscript fit within the romance genre and that it be unpublished and uncontracted.
    Judges: First round judges are published authors, RWA PRO members, industry professionals (i.e. librarians and booksellers), and others who love, respect, and understand all that is good about the romance genre. Judges are STRONGLY encouraged to add comments on the entries and on the scoresheets.
    Final Judges: Your work will go before a panel of at least six (YES SIX!!) agents and editors, announced on our website, who will pick the best of the lot.
    Top Prize: Winner will be announced at the NOLA STARs Workshop March 3, 2017. Three hundred dollars in cash and a trophy. All other finalists will receive certificates. Results will be publicized on website, loops, and in the RWR.
