Local RWA chapters offer a number of conferences, contests, and workshops. Listed below are the chapter contests and conferences scheduled for the coming months.

    **The Beacon 2016

    **Heart to Heart Contest

    Fee: SFA-RWA Members $15/Non-members $25
    Deadline: August 31, 2016
    Eligibility: Open to all writers unpublished by an RWA-approved publisher as of the entry deadline. Prospective entrants may be published with a non RWA-recognized publisher; however, they may not enter books/manuscripts that have been professionally edited or have ISBN numbers.
    Entry: All electronic. Enter the magical scene in which your hero and heroine meet for the first time. Maximum 15 pages (with an optional one-page setup, unjudged). Each entry may only be entered in one category. Submit as many different entries as you wish.

    Judges: Every entrant receives one PRO or PAN judge.
    Final Judges: Top three finalists in each category will have their entries read by an agent, a print editor, and an e-publisher editor.

    **Gateway to the Best

    Eligibility: All authors of the entry are unpublished and not contracted in novel-length fiction (over 40,000 words) within the last 3 years from July 30, 2016.     October Contests

    **The Suzannah 2016

    Sponsor: NOLA STARs
    Fee: $30 prior to Sept. 1st, $35 on or after Sept. 1st. Members receive a $5 discount.
    Deadline: October 1, 2016
    Eligibility: Writers may or may not be published; however, the manuscript must fit within the romance genre and be unpublished and uncontracted.
    Entry: Entry should be a maximum of 7,200 words, including synopsis (there is no restriction on length of synopsis, so long as the entire entry does NOT exceed 7,200).
    Categories: The Suzannah is different from most other writers’ contests in that published authors and unpublished writers all compete against one another in a single pool of entries without categories.
    Judges: First round judges are published authors, RWA PRO members, industry professionals (i.e. librarians and booksellers) and others who love, respect, and understand all that is good about the romance genre.
    Final Judges: Your work will go before a panel of at least six (YES SIX!!) agents and editors—announced on our website—who will pick the best of the lot.
    Top Prize: Winner will be announced at the NOLA STARs Conference March 4, 2017, and receive $300 in cash and a trophy. All other finalists will receive certificates. Results will be publicized on website, loops, and in the RWR.

    Eligibility: Open to both unpublished and published authors. Unpublished may enter any category. Published may enter any category in which they’ve not been contracted or published in for three years. Open to RWA and non-RWA members. Windy City members are not eligible to enter.
    Entry: First 25 pages. Electronic entries only.
