Nineteenth Century PoisonsInstructor: Kerry Cathers Register here: https://rwakissofdeath.org/workshops/Description: Though this was the era when arsenic was king, there were other poisons available. Some had existed for a long time, others, like nicotine, were being created. What poisons were available and when? How can your murderer get their hands on them? How were they administered and what was the lethal dose? And what symptoms can you expect? All of it put into social context. How should your characters think about and handle poison? And, what pitfalls should you avoid? Bio: Kerry Cathers runs the website A Curiosity of Crime, a research resource for authors of nineteenth-century detective fiction. She published the first book in a research series, A Writer’s Guide to Nineteenth-Century Murder by Arsenic; it’s follow-up on poison is due late 2024. She teaches forensics and nineteenth-century crime and law enforcement to help authors craft intriguing fiction. She presented at the Historical Novel Society North America’s conference in 2023 and has given seminars for various Sisters in Crime chapters, Mystery Writers of America, and Kiss of Death’s COFFIN series.
